Introduction to Portfolio

This portfolio is used as a way for me to organize my thoughts as a future educator on my experiences in Rome. While working in an international school for a month I will gain knowledge and perspective on what it takes to be a teacher especially in a diverse classroom. Throughout the trip we will be taking part in excursions to multiple cities and places throughout Italy. This trips will allow me to gain even more cultural perspective and expand my adaptability and global outlook.

About Me

I am a Junior at James Madison University. I am an Interdisciplinary Studies major with a minor in Elementary Education. I was born and raised in Burke, VA. I have one older brother who attended JMU as well and graduated this past year. I am on the executive council for Student Ambassadors for JMU. During the summer I work as a summer camp counselor with middle schoolers. I have never left the country and this opportunity combines two things I greatly want to experience: traveling abroad, and working with elementary schoolers.

Teaching Philosophy

I believe in a balance between the student centered and teacher centered classroom. There should be a level of instruction from the teacher but they should act as more of a facilitator. I believe students should have the opportunity to experience open forums and philosophical discussions at every age. Students should have options in the classroom and opportunities to shape their learning effectively to fit their needs.
